Maxwell ist der Meinung, dass Brighton zu viel fernsieht. Da er möchte, dass sich sein Sohn zukünftig dem Mannschaftssport widmet, beschließt Fran, Brighton zum Baseball-Übungsplatz mitzunehmen. Doch bereits der erste Einsatz endet mit einer schmerzhaften Erfahrung, die Brighton einen spontanen Besuch bei Frans Mutter Sylvia beschert. Dort stellt sich bei Kaffee und Kuchen eine ganz andere Begabung des Jungen heraus: Brighton ist ein Canasta-Ass. Diese Entdeckung wird im Hause Fine gebührend gefeiert, denn kurz zuvor war die vierte Dame im Canasta-Kreis von Frans Großmutter, Yetta Fine, ausgefallen und ein Ersatz für das bevorstehende Turnier in Atlanta ist nicht in Sicht. Brighton wird in den Canasta-Kreis aufgenommen und für das Turnier trainiert - ein "Mannschaftssport", der nicht gerade Maxwells Gefallen findet...

Mr. Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy) , ein allein erziehender Vater und Witwer, ist natürlich skeptisch und findet ihre Outfits anfänglich unpassend. Doch da sie die Kinder gut im Griff hat sieht er darüber hinweg. Doch dann entwickelt sich ihre Beziehung weiter....
