Ein Jahr nach dem gemeinsamen College-Abschluss ziehen fünf Freunde ein ernüchterndes Zwischenfazit. Ihre Wünsche und Träume haben sich in Luft aufgelöst. Sophia, die Abschlussrednerin ihres Jahrgangs, will Autorin werden, jobbt aber als Donut Girl. Daphne arbeitet als unbezahlte Praktikantin in einer Werbeagentur. Miles träumt von einer Karriere als Unterwäschemodel, serviert bislang aber nur oben ohne als Kellner in einer Bar. Den Aufstiegsplänen des Ex-Pärchens Lou und Raviva kommt eine ungewollte Schwangerschaft in die Quere. Trotz schrecklicher Gelegenheitsjobs und ständigem Pech in der Liebe versuchen die desillusionierten Freunde stets, ihren Optimismus zu wahren. Die in Chicago gedrehte Dramedy-Serie stammt von „Dirty Sexy Money“-Erfinder Craig Wright. Sie soll zum Teil auf den Erfahrungen seines 21-jährigen Sohnes basieren und sich ganz allgemein den Nachfahren der ‚Generation X‘ und ihrem Leben zwischen Anspruch und Wirklichkeit widmen. Geplant war ursprünglich eine halbstündige Comedyserie. Daphnes attraktiver Boss Todd wurde im Original-Pilotfilm von Chris Carmack (Luke Ward in „O.C., California“) gespielt. Er wurde später durch Charlie Weber („Buffy“) ersetzt.
