Als sich Giorgios Vater bei einem Feuer verletzt und das Geld für den Arzt fehlt, gelangt Giorgio in die Fänge des finsteren Mannes Luini, `Der Mann mit der Narbe`, der ihn mit ein paar anderen Jungen nach Mailand verschleppt, um sie dort als Schornsteinfegergehilfen zu verkaufen. Auf der Reise nach Mailand freundet er sich mit Alfredo an, der aus dem Dorf Misox stammt. In Mailand angekommen, beginnt für ihn eine harte Zeit. Er wird dem Schornsteinfeger Rossi unterstellt. Dort leidet Giorgio unter Hunger und wird von Rossis Sohn ständig gedemütigt. Doch bald schließt Giorgio Freundschaft mit anderen Kaminfegerjungen und gründet zusammen mit Alfredo „Die schwarzen Brüder“, die geschworen haben sich in guten und schlechten Zeiten beizustehen, um gemeinsam die Zeit in Mailand zu überstehen.
