Der junge Ikuta Sorouku lebt im Reich Katvarna, welches mit dem Nachbarland Kioka im Krieg ist. Er ist eigentlich als ziemlich faul bekannt, doch durch gewisse Umstände nimmt er am Millitärexamen teil. Dies war das Beste, was er mit sich machen konnte, denn der 17-Jährige wächst zu einem großartigen Soldaten heran, der von allen Seiten nur noch Großkommandant genannt wird. Durch seinen überlegenen Intellekt schafft er es, im Krieg zu überleben.
