Vier Volleyballspielerinnen, die Probleme mit Mila als Mannschaftskapitän haben, wollen die Mannschaft verlassen. Mila gelingt es, dass drei davon ihr Rücktrittsgesuch wieder zurücknehmen. Bei der vierten, Yuri Izumi, bleiben allerdings alle Überredungsversuche erfolglos. Yuri ist fest entschlossen, die Mannschaft zu verlassen.

Die 12-jährige Mila Ayuhara ist die Heldin dieser überaus erfolgreichen japanischen Anime-Serie aus dem Jahre 1969. Nachdem sie eine schwere Lungenkrankheit überstanden hat, beschließt die leidenschaftliche Volleyballspielerin Mitglied des Schulteams ihres neuen Heimatortes Fujimi zu werden, für den sie zur Heilung ihrer Krankheit die Großstadt Tokio verlassen musste. Es gilt, Konkurrenzkämpfe mit anderen Spielerinnen auszutragen, sich ins Team zu integrieren, den Schulstress zu bewältigen und nicht zuletzt mit den Gefühlen klarzukommen, welche die erste Liebe mit sich bringt. Aber zusammen mit ihrer besten Freundin Midori geht Mila durch dick und dünn, und auch ihr Trainer Herr Hongo erweist sich abseits des Spielfeldes als wichtige seelische Stütze.
