Dwight Hendricks (Jason Lee) ist Detective beim Memphis Police Department. Hendricks ist großer Elvis-Fan und steht in der Stadt des Blues und Rock’n’Roll auch gerne mal nachts auf der Bühne, um sein Idol zu imitieren. Zudem wohnt er bei seiner Mutter (Celia Weston), zu der er ein enges Verhältnis pflegt. Die neue Vorgesetzte, Lieutenant Tanya Rice (Alfre Woodard), versucht den nicht ganz pflegeleichten Hendricks an der kurzen Leine zu halten und seine unkonventionellen Ermittlungsmethoden unter Kontrolle zu bringen. Unterstützt wird Hendricks von seinem Partner Charlie White (Sam Hennings) und dem Streifenpolizisten Davey Sutton
