Oma Leni bekommt, kurz bevor sie zum Elternabend will, um das Geld für die Klassenfahrt zu bezahlen, einen Herzinfarkt und muss ins Krankenhaus. Max’ schlimmste Befürchtung wird wahr: wenn er sie verliert, hat er niemanden mehr. Doch es kommt noch schlimmer: Im Krankenhaus wird Oma Leni bestohlen. Ein Dieb klaut ihr nicht nur das schwer verdiente Geld, sondern auch eine wertvolle Halskette, die sie nur zu besonderen Anlässen trägt. Um sie nicht noch mehr zu beunruhigen, ruft Max nicht die Polizei, sondern macht sich mit den Pfefferkörnern auf die Suche nach dem Dieb. Während Emma und Henri die Hamburger Juweliere abklappern, um die verschwundene Kette zu finden, recherchieren Max und Nina im Krankenhaus. Im Zuge der Ermittlungen erlebt Nina Max plötzlich von einer ganz neuen Seite: sensibel und fürsorglich. Damit wächst er ihr zunehmend ans Herz und sie beginnt, sich in ihn zu verlieben.

Außer Nesthäkchen Vivi wachsen alle allmählich aus der Kinderserie hinaus, und so gesellen sich ab Folge 32 nach und nach die neuen Pfefferkörner zu Vivi: Paul (Lukas Decker), Katja (Jana Fomenko), Johanna, genannt Jojo (Carlotta Cornehl), und Xiaomeng, Spitzname Panda (Tim Patrick Chan).
