Nach dem Erfolg der Kindersendung „Sesamstraße“ im Jahr 1969 will Jim Henson für seine Puppen eine eigene Show kreieren und produziert 1974 zunächst ein Special mit dem Titel „The Muppets Valentine Show“, in dem Kermit der Frosch bereits die Hauptrolle spielt und Schauspielerin Mia Farrow als menschlicher Stargast auftritt. Einige weitere Figuren dieses Specials tauchen auch in der ersten Staffel der späteren „Muppet Show“ auf, werden aber bald zu Nebenfiguren und räumen ihren Platz für die eigentlichen Stars wie Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzy-Bär, Scooter, Dr. Bunsenbrenner und seinen Assistenten Beaker, den schwedischen Koch und Rowlf, den Hund.
