Die knallharten Fünf vom S.W.A.T.-Team (Special Weapons And Tactics) nehmen besonders blutige und gefährliche Aufträge an, die die Polizei mit ihren Mitteln nicht regeln kann. Dabei setzen sie gnadenlos jede erdenkliche Art von Waffen ein, die Erfolg bringen könnte. Das Team besteht aus Lieutenant Harrelson, dem Commanding Officer, dem Beobachter und Kommunikator Sergeant Kay, dem Teamscout Jim, dem Kämpfer Dominic und T.J., der Nachhut. Mit einem speziell ausgerüsteten Wagen fahren sie zu ihren Einsätzen, die meist direkt in der Feuerlinie oder an vorderster Front liegen. Im Film S.W.A.T. - Die Spezialeinheit von 2003 ist es Samuel L. Jackson alias Sergeant Hondo Harrelson, der die Einsatztruppe leitet. In der Spielfilm-Fortsetzung S.W.A.T.: Firefight von 2011 steht Officer Walter Cutler im Mittelpunkt, Harrelson spielt keine Rolle mehr.
