Buffy und ihre Freunde besuchen die Highschool im kalifornischen Sunnydale. Dort befindet sich bedauerlicherweise das Tor zur Hölle, der Höllenschlund. Es wimmelt nur so von Untoten, Monstern und Dämonen und alle naselang droht die Apokalypse. Die Erwachsenen im Ort ahnen nichts und halten Buffy wegen ihrer häufigen Verwicklungen in nie aufgeklärte, aber eindeutige Fälle der Zerstörung von Schuleigentum oder Bausubstanz für eine Unruhestifterin. Nur der Bibliothekar Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) weiß von Buffys ungewöhnlicher Berufung zur Jägerin, durch welche sie die Fähigkeiten besitzt, gegen Vampire und Dämonen zu kämpfen. Giles unterstützt Buffy und ist ihr Wächter, eine Doppelfunktion als Mentor und Trainer.
