Als im April 1940 deutsche Truppen Norwegen besetzen, trifft die Kronprinzessin Märtha eine folgenreiche Entscheidung: Sie beschließt, mit ihren Kindern über Schweden in die USA zu fliehen, während ihr Mann Olav an der Seite seines Vaters, König Haakon VII., zurückbleibt. Märtha erhält politisches Asyl im Weißen Haus und freundet sich mit Franklin D. Roosevelt an. Doch der Präsident scheint schon bald tiefere Gefühle für sie zu hegen. Kann sie ihn überzeugen, ihrem Land militärischen Beistand zu leisten, obwohl er einen amerikanischen Kriegseintritt bereits ausgeschlossen hat? Mit ihren Versuchen der Einflussnahme schafft Märtha sich in Washington einige mächtige Feinde.
