Ricky Gervais und Stephen Merchant möchten, dass ihr Kumpel Karl seine spirituelle Seite kennenlernt. Deshalb organisieren sie für ihn eine Reise nach Indien. Beim Kumbh Mela, dem größten Pilgerfest der Welt, trifft der Brite auf nackte Sadhus, die sich in Askese üben und statt Kleider Asche am Körper tragen. Ein rituelles Bad im Ganges soll den guten Karl auf das Nirwana vorbereiten. Doch die erhoffte Erleuchtung bleibt aus. Stattdessen hat der geborene Antiheld auf der Fahrt zum legendären Taj Mahal mit akuten Verdauungsproblemen zu kämpfen.
